Endangered corals

Government proposes adding coral to endangered species list:

For the first time, the government wants to add two types of coral to the endangered species list.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says staghorn and elkhorn corals have “remained at low levels without noticeable recovery, and in cases ... they continue to decline.”

Threats to the coral include physical damage from human activities and hurricanes, as well as disease and bleaching from rising ocean temperatures.

Both corals are found in shallow water on reefs throughout the Bahamas, Florida and the Caribbean. They grow best in clear water free from excess nutrients, runoff or algal blooms.
Interesting. I'm surprised that no corals have been listed before. Many species are in danger, so you'd think they would have been listed before.
