The Auburn Plainsman - House approves military benefits
The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation with a 388-43 vote March 16 that will increase death benefits given to families of military personnel that die during active duty.
Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Alabama, a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a press release he proposed the legislation to honor members of the military killed during service by increasing the compensation given to families. …
The approved bill increases the death gratuity from $12,420 to $100,000. In addition, the maximum benefits available for life insurance increase from $250,000 to $400,000 for those who opt for Servicemen’s Group Life Insurance coverage. …
Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., proposed the bill with Bachus and said the increased compensation in no way takes the place of losing a loved one.
“While no amount of money could make up for the loss of a loved one, this increase will help ensure the families of those who have served with honor are properly taken care of,” he said in a press release.
