A valid question
So for the sake of argument, fine: let's grant the central premise the White House was following the dangerous progress of Katrina well in advance, and urged evacuations. Let's grant the premise that they were "ready" for this storm, according to the standards that Bush set for himself. On vacation. While receiving ceremonial guitars. It's a fair point. If Bush was sitting around waiting for Blanco to call, that implies he knew how desperate the situation was. If he knew how desperate the situation was, he should have been pushing the federal agencies to have their plans ready. And if he did that, and they failed to execute those plans when the time came, he should be firing someone. Same thing if they failed to make the plans to stage the equipment and personnel.
Does that make the now-universally-recognized-as-inadequate administration response better? Or spectacularly worse?
Here's the problem, with all these lies. There's a city gone. And during the period of time when the people of that city needed help most, that help was not there. That's not spinnable. That's simple fact. It's not going to go away.
Don't explain it to me. Explain it to the families of these 32 people. Start with Aaron Broussard, then move on to the other 10,000 people who ended up like this.
Here's what Josh Marshall is saying:
Take a moment to note what's happening here: these are the marks of repressive government, which mixes inefficiency with authoritarianism. The crew that couldn't get key aid on the scene last week is coming in in force now and taking as one of its key missions cutting public information about what's happening in the city.Serious accusations, and not made lightly. Marshall doesn't use language like this idly. But it's true. The fact is, alligators are eating the dead. Not showing photographs of that won't make that any less true. It'll just make people less pissed off. But people should be pissed off, there's been colossal incompetence and it won't get fixed in time to save more lives if people don't get pissed.
So, stare that alligator in it's eye, and then take it to the cold-hearted bastards arguing about who fucked up more.
