Public Service

According to the Journal World, the relief effort for the Boardwalk Apartment fire is looking for volunteers to collect and distribute supplies for the people stranded by the fire.

“We’re looking for people to help at the storage facility outside the Leo Center (Seventh and New York, north of railroad tracks) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. beginning Friday,” said Steve Ozark, who’s heading up Lawrence Community InterFaith Initiative’s relief effort.
… Volunteers, especially those with pickup trucks, are asked to e-mail Ozark at

Needed items include food, toys, furniture, lamps, computers, towels, toilet paper, light bulbs, bedding, pots, pans, utensils, skillets, microwave ovens — anything a person needs to make a home.

Also, Boardwalk manager Donna Watson encouraged displaced tenants to contact her office at 842-4444 to begin the process for refunding security deposits and to pick up vouchers for donated items.
Three bodies have been found in the ruins and a person with a history of playing with fire was charged with their murders.

One of the museum grad students got out uninjured, the other had to jump out of a 3rd floor window, along with his girlfriend. Both are at the KU Med Center; he has two broken ankles, she's in the burn unit with a broken wrists, broken vertebrae and smoke inhalation.

Help out if you have time.
