Reid and Miers

Salon.com follows the trail:
Asked to confirm or deny reports that Reid had "signaled" to Bush that Miers would be an acceptable nominee, Reid spokesman Jim Manley said in an email to Salon: "He urged the president to consider her for the post -- not that she was acceptable."
This is a bit of a fine distinction, but it seems like Reid either intended Miers to be a tarbaby or is trying to turn her into one now.

It's possible that he saw her as a genuine compromise, but when the Republicans balked, he had to pull back.
