Sad but true

Mark Kleiman overheard these comments at some drug policy meetings (via DeLong):
Does research influence policy? Certainly it does. Especially bad research.

Yes, it would be nice to have evidence-based policy-making. But even if we can't get that, perhaps we can do away with policy-based evidence-making.
They could have been said at the Pentagon, the EPA, the Park Service, or in any other group of scientists who interact with the government even occasionally.
