Former Regent takes on Ken Willard

Former regent will run for State Board of Ed:
Jack Wempe of Lyons, a Democrat, is seeking the seat held by conservative Republican Kenneth Willard of Hutchinson.

Donna Viola, president of the McPherson school board, will challenge Willard in the Republican primary Aug. 1.

Wempe is a former Little River superintendent and left the Board of Regents in 2003 after serving four years. Prior to his appointment to the regents, he served in the Kansas House of Representatives for four terms.
This gives us Democrats and moderate Republican challengers to every radical on the Board of Education.

So far there are no announced challengers to the only moderate up for re-election, but Janet Waugh expects a primary challenge and a general election challenge, both filed at the last moment.

In the 3rd District, which covers suburban Kansas City, Don Weiss and Harry MacDonald are taking on John Bacon.

In the 5th, Connie Morris faces Tim Cruz and Sally Cauble.

In the 7th, we now have Jack Wempe, and also Donna Viola.

In the 9th, Kent Runyan and Jana Shaver will challenge Iris Van Meter's son-in-law.
