The Last Tree of Ténéré

The Proceedings of the Athanasius Kircher Society tells the crushing tale of The Last Tree of Ténéré. The acacia was the last remnant of what had been a great forest before desertification destroyed most of it. The very last tree fell when a drunk driver hit it. It had been the only tree within 400 km. The wikipedia reports that "it is the only tree to be shown on a map at a scale of 1:4,000,000."

The shade of the Ténéré acacia joined the song of the dodo in the annals of the forgotten and unknowable natural world in 1973.
