The Proceedings of the Athanasius Kircher Society tells the crushing tale of The Last Tree of Ténéré
. The acacia was the last remnant of what had been a great forest before desertification destroyed most of it. The very last tree fell when a drunk driver hit it. It had been the only tree within 400 km. The wikipedia reports that "it is the only tree to be shown on a map at a scale of 1:4,000,000."
The shade of the Ténéré acacia joined the song of the dodo
in the annals of the forgotten and unknowable natural world in 1973.
