Via a guest post at Echidne's we learn of a new kind of crisis "the lack of access to adequate, affordable, and sanitary menstrual protection."

As we face various immediate threats that get on the front pages of every day's paper, it's easy to forget that there are important, long-standing problems that we haven't been able to focus on because we're trying to deal with really stupid mistakes that have created brand new crises.

The lack of menstrual pads takes women out of the work force, increases risks of HIV infection and other disease rates. It's a crisis and because it relates to the icky parts of the body, it's a crisis no one wants to talk about.
